Kristen Stewart, Welcome to the Rileys Debuts in Fall

March 13th, 2010

“Welcome to the Rileys,” the indie film featuring Kristen Stewart as a down-and-out teen alongside James Gandolfini and Melissa Leo, has locked up a distribution deal that will likely mean a fall release.

The Jake Scott-directed Ken Hixon-written drama was picked up by Sony Worldwide Acquisitions Group, which acquired the domestic distribution rights and is considering a fall release, according to Deadlinehollywood’s Nikki Finke

The film made premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January and had an obvious market among “Twilight fans,” who adore Stewart. They reportedly campaign to get the film into theaters, according to Finke.

The movie was recently screened at the Berlin Film Festival. It received only a luke-warm reception from critics, but Stewart, Leo and James Gandolfini have been praised for their performances.

For her part, Stewart is protective of the film and the character. “I’m not playing a stripper,” she told reporters before the film’s screening. “My character — basically nothing belongs to her. She’s an open sore.”

“It’s really not a stripper movie at all. It sort of just opens your eyes about people that don’t have options.”

Gandolfini and Leo play a couple whose marriage becomes a wreck following the death of their teenage daughter. On a business trip to New Orleans, Riley finds himself drawn to Stewart’s character Mallory, a foul-mouthed, pot-smoking, over-sexed prostitute.

Riley sees her as a surrogate for his own daughter, who was 15 when she died. Riley’s wife, (Leo) overcomes her grief and paranoia and agrees to take Mallory in.

Stewart’s other indie projects include “Adventureland” in 2009, “What Just Happened” and “The Yellow Hankerchief” in 2008. Her latest film, “The Runaways,” a bio pic about 70s rocker Joan Jett, with Dakota Fanning, opens in theaters March 19.

Kristen Stewart’s ‘Stripper Movie’ (Not) Gets Distributor

February 17th, 2010

Twilight’s Kristen Stewart will get to show off her acting range, after all, in the indie movie, “Welcome to the Rileys.” The film has found a U.S. distributor and will debut in the fall.

The movie, in which Stewart plays foul-mouthed, pot-smoking, over-sexed prostitute, was just screened at the Berlin Film Festival.

The movie received only a luke-warm reception from critics, but the three main stars Stewart, Melissa Leo and James Gandolfini have been praised for their performances.

For her part, Stewart is protective of the film and the character.

“I’m not playing a stripper,” she told reporters before the film’s first screening Saturday. “My character — basically nothing belongs to her. She’s an open sore.”

“It’s really not a stripper movie at all. It sort of just opens your eyes about people that don’t have options.”

For the record, Director Jake Scott, son of famed Director Ridley Scott, is making it clear that he wanted Stewart for the role before she appeared in “Twilight.”

Scott is best known for directing music videos for bands like the Smashing Pumpkins, R.E.M. and U2. Screenwriter Ken Hixon previously worked with Robert de Niro and James Franco on “City by the Sea.”

Scott said Sean Penn had recommended Stewart on her performance in his movie “Into the Wild,” a film Penn wrote and directed.

In fact, the low budget Rileys was already shot and in the can before Stewart appeared in “Twilight” in October 2008.

“We shot this in 2008, so ‘Twilight’ came out when we’d wrapped,” Scott told reporters in Berlin on Monday (Feb. 16). “I saw her in ‘Into the Wild’. We got lucky.”

Without a doubt. Stewart’s turn in “Twilight and sequel “New Moon” has made her an international star with a huge fan base, which follows her every move.

Her Rileys character, Mallory, however, will be the antithesis of the shy, soft spoken Bella Swan in “Twilight.”

Doug Riley (Gandolfini), finds Mallory in the New Orleans brothel he runs, and hopes she can fill the gap in his life created by the loss of his own daughter.

Riley sees her as a surrogate for his own daughter, who died in a car crash aged 15. Riley’s wife, (Leo) overcomes her grief and paranoia and agrees to take Mallory in.

Melding the chain-smoking, foul-mouthed Mallory into his family, drives the movie.

“Rileys” is Stewart’s other indie projects include “Adventureland” in 2009, “What Just Happened” and “The Yellow Hankerchief” in 2008.

Kristen Stewart Strips & Pole Dances In New Movie

February 3rd, 2010

Pole dancing ain’t easy, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise! Kristen Stewart can attest to how difficult it is to pole dance. The New Moon actress was covered with bruises after filming a routine in her upcoming movie, Welcome To The Rileys.

She lameneted, “I did some pole dancing. I got bruises all over my legs. I tore myself up doing it. It sucked. The cool thing about my character is she is not sultry and she is not sexy.”

Kristen took lessons from real strippers to prepare for the role. However, she wasn’t quite ready when the role required her to get naked in front of the camera. Director Jake scott recalled, “She was terrified. The strip club we shot in was really a club and was that dirty and really that tough.”

But the professional Kristen nailed the nude scene in the closed off set in the end. “She killed it,” beamed Scott.

January 22nd, 2010

Kristen Stewart has had enough with no third base in films and she’s just going straight to the bed in her non-Twilight Saga roles now! Even has a former Soprano Boss at her side barking at her while rocking birthday suit in this new clip from Welcome to the Rileys. Last December brought us a set of stills from the film that also mostly feature the young actress in her role as a teenage stripper, and we added another one earlier this month, rocking sweet kicks and chatting with co-star James Gadolfini. Below we have a clip that weighs in at about a minute long from the film.

Welcome to the Rileys is an indie film directed by Jake Scott and written by Ken Hixon (who wrote City by the Sea and is also) a multiple Edgar Award nominee. It’s set to debut at this week’s Sundance Film Festival with a wider U.S. release date that’s as of yet unknown. Joining Kristen Stewart & James Gandolfini are a cast that also includes Melissa Leo, David Jensen and Lance E. Nichols. Make sure you check out our coverage of two other non-Twilight Stewart roles has up this year, The Runaways and The Yellow Handkerchief.
